Heading to Texas for Pedagogy & Theater of the Oppressed Conference

I was excited to learn week before last that my proposal was selected as a workshop for the upcoming Pedagogy and Theater of the Oppressed which will be in Austin, TX this year. I attended the conference last year with The Saartjie Project and we performed then. I enjoyed being in Minnesota, but I am really looking forward to being Texas. I've only been in Texas briefly when we stopped in Texas when I was a cruise of the Gulf of Mexico.

The workshop I'm presenting is about my first play Shades of Black: a thought in progress which I wrote and produced when working as a college administrator. I will sharing with educators how to use theater as a tool of engagement.

I think I'm going to take my 6 year-old. School should be out by then-- or almost out, and I think she will enjoy it. The thing to worry about now is getting a reasonably priced air & hotel package now that airplane tickets are ridiculously priced and airlines charge for every single thing. Wish me luck!

So, what a wonderful surprise to wake up with word from Jessica Solomon, the founder of the Saartjie Project, that we have been featured in the Washington Post. Sending Her Into Chaos

2010 will not be missed when it's over. This year, for real, has been incredibly hard on so many levels. While I am so proud of a lot that took place over the year-- my play debuted in the Fringe fest, I had some incredible contract work and opportunities to meet artists in other states-- the tough times have been abundant. What has really been a challenge just in the last four months has been my daughter's start in a public school. While I've written past blog posts talking about instances at her school that have been of concern, nothing compares to last month's situation that stemmed from a parent-teacher meeting we had with the teacher. Needless to say, it wasn't good. At all. The teacher didn't have a gradebook with her, didn't have Khari's portfolio with her to speak from and was literally chatting and shooting the breeze it felt, unable to convey any info of substance about our daughter's progress. Moon in Killer Stilts

( In photo: My little one on her first day of school this week) So, this has been a busy week. My little one started first grade and the verdict is in---> School Rocks! I am so thrilled she is enjoying her new school year with her new teacher and friends. I literally had to have a therapy moment with her the night before school started because she was a bit nervous about starting the new school year with a new teacher. I was consoling her that she is smart enough for first-grade and the kids there will like her. It's so precious to me how little ones are so sensitive and need so much reassurance. They depend on us so much. These formative years, I believe, will dictate how they treat those in their life once they become adults. I really hope I am poising my little girl to be a sensitive friend to others. It's hard to be that sometimes, I struggle with that even now.
