Raheem Devaughn, Lady Soul Rockers and the State of Soul Music

Soul Music Alive and Kicking in Southeast and BeyondThe Washington, DC, area has churned out dozens of soulful talent over the years, most notably the legendary Marvin Gaye and incomparable Roberta Flack. Talented singer Raheem Devaughn is one of the newest additions to the list of nationally successful soul singers who hail from the Washington, DC, area. His debut album, “The Love Experience (2005),” reached number 46 on the Billboard 200 album chart, with the singles “You” and “Guess Who Loves You More” receiving national mainstream airplay and garnering Devaughn instant comparisons to Marvin Gaye. The album “Love Behind the Melody” (2008) is his latest work, earning Devaughn a nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 2008 Grammy Awards for the single, “Woman.”
Devaughn came to Fort Dupont Park on Sept. 7 to perform during an impromptu concert sponsored by Councilmembers Yvette Alexander (Ward 7) and Kwame Brown (At-Large) and hosted by the radio station WPGC's Romeo and the Street Team.
